Algae maintains nosing around clean power news.
It does not have the sunny refuge of solar as well as exotic qualities involving wind, tidal as well as
geothermal power. However the rapidity of algae fuel’s reported advances tend to be hard to
disregard. At least with this previous reporter.
In my yard at the University involving California, Merced, researchers obtained a grant in order to
“perform a comprehensive lifestyle cycle analysis study involving algae biofuels.” The particular
money, a unpretentious $142,747, is portion of about $3.5 zillion issued by the Ca Energy
Commission’s Public Curiosity Energy Study program.

Algae requires a back seat within the grant some other projects which include improving main grid
reliability, energy efficiency as well as automobile gas efficiency. But, hey, it could algae. Pond foam.
This is actually the items that may be produced in wastewater deciding ponds, harvested and
changed into diesel energy. Or meals additives, you’ve got a know
But the main thing is algae wasn’t neglected. Decades cold blend. This stuff reveals true promise
alternatively power source.

CEC Bureau Jeffrey Byron place it this way in the statement from your agency: “California’s power
comes from the opportunity to purchase energy research over the board.”
No joking. And this fish pond scum just may maintain oil prices from going broke. Cambridge,
Mass-based Joule Limitless announced that it has established a “cynobacterium” which secrete a
product similar to ethanol or diesel powered fuel, based on Joule biologist Serta Robertson, quoted
within dailytechcom.

This breakthrough, the business says, could allow manufacturing 15,000 gallons involving diesel per
acre yearly. The company states it can get it done for $30 the barrel
That has yet to become proved commercially, obviously. But advancements are coming hot as well as
heavy around the world. Biodigest.com rattled away a handful of offering developments in Australia,
leading off the list along with serious production efforts through Aurora Algae as well as Algae.Tec.
And Oilgaecom/blog/, a good aggregator of stories, listings multiple posts day-to-day. One that found
my eye highlighted the peer review of the particular draft report “Biofuels and also the Environment:
Initial Triennial Are accountable to Congress,” scheduled through the US Epa. The particular report
will give Our elected representatives a taste of elaborate coming.
Expect pond foam to do greater than lurk in the puddle on the ground along with lobbyists during
discussion.

I perform like to include useful applications during these rants. Absolutely nothing epitomizes that
more compared to biofuel-powered Bentley Ls Supersports convertible, reportedly effective at more
than two hundred mph. Your vehicle debuted soon on the Geneva Auto Display in Swiss. Ami Cholia
involving inhabitat.com writes: “an on-board energy supply system monitors the information of the
energy tank to ensure that energy and torque remain continuous regardless of the rate of petrol in
order to biofuel”
Pretty cool. Therefore it can handle whatever you throw at this and still go quick. We put energy oil
in a pest once and it produced. Barely. There were to clean the particular plugs, but it received us
out of the jam. The Bentley, I actually assume, could be better.

Biofuels nonetheless must prove them selves. Ethanol, even while an additive, offers gotten mixed
evaluations. For instance, the particular lawnmower mechanic in Outdated Town Clovis explained if
I held using that “cheap crap gas” I’d carry on and end up having the mower’s carburetor. The girl
enfriamiento? Ethanol. This gets gummy and awful if allowed to sit down a long time. (Hint: make
use of stabilizer.)
UC Merced programs to analyze emerging biofuels technology and offer feedback around the
rather interesting idea of extracting fuel which require a lot land, water or looking after. And pond
foam grows rapidly in a kind of drinking water. The remaining material, after essential oil extraction,
could be useful for fertilizer.
“We will think about the efficient usage of residual algae biomass as an power rich waste stream as
well as new harvesting techniques which could improve the durability of the general process,”
composed J. Elliott Campbell as well as Gerardo Diaz involving UC Merced and Paul M. Norbeck of
College involving California, Riverside.
As I actually read over their own proposal, I determined that this process of taking out and refining
sounds significantly above the paygrade.
Algae is almost always found in a small amount in fresh water streams and wetlands if conditions are right the algae can thrive, creating significant issues in the pond and the other creatures living there.

What is Algae Biomass?

Algae are actually plants, although they often don’t have all of the defining attributes of plants, like stems, roots or foliage. There are numerous varieties of algae, it is possible to effectively break them down into three types. Planktonic algae are tiny organisms that are suspended in the water. Filamentous algae are small green threads form suspended mats on a ponds surface. Macrophytic algae are secured to the bottom of and can have stems and leaves.

Algae Problems

Algae will be a severe threat to other marine flora and fauna in the same lake or pond. As algae thrive and starts to take over the entire pond, the nutrients in the water will decrease, leaving other plants unable to grow. Algae use the dissolved oxygen in the water overnight and can delete the oxygen level so much that marine creatures cannot thrive. Algae can also have a very strong odor and cling to your skin, making recreational use of the pond difficult.

Origins of Algal Blooms

A little bit of algae is actually great for a lake or pond, as algae are principal food sources for aquatic life. When nutrients are perfect for algae development, the algae can grow out of control and soon cover the entire body of the pond. Algal blooms are most frequent in bodies of water that get considerable run-off water from the area, as the run-off frequently contains nutrients that algae needs to grow like nitrogen and phosphorus. Algae could also bloom when deep water currents shift to bring nutrient abundant water to within a few feet within the surface, permitting the algae to obtain the nutrients and sunlight they require.

Algae Control

The best type of algae control will depend on the problem the pond or lake has. For algae growth on top of smaller lakes, mechanized removal by using a rake may be the best option. Many herbicides are usually effective but have a significant risk of harming marine life. Rotting barley hay has shown to reduce algae growth.

Some species of fish like the grass carp, were introduced to lakes and ponds, so they could consume the algae. Altering the landscape perimeter surrounding the lake or pond, to minimize the nutrient run-off that fuels the algae bloom, is a very helpful way to control algae blooms.

Algae As Renewable Energy

Algae biomass from lakes and ponds can now be used for power with the innovative technology of Algae Aviation Fuel. Their process can convert any fresh water algae into a viable turbine bio fuel for use as ground electrical power. This technology is a first of its kind that does not require the removal of oil from algae biomass to make fuel. Countries everywhere with algae bloom problems can now harvest the biomass for use as electric power instead of land filling the biomass or using herbicides.

With the increasing fuel prices of today lots of people have started to consider an alternative way to fuel their vehicles. Algal biodiesel fits the bill for many individuals who started making this biofuel from algal biomass in their own backyards.

And why not make your own personal algae biodiesel, the raised fuel prices makes finding substitute fuel resources very important these days, especially with the recent oil spill in the gulf of Mexico, individuals desire to save money and the natural environment more than ever.

Algae biofuel is a great way to save a substantial amount of money on your diesel fuel costs. Not forgetting you can also save big on your heating cost if you live in colder areas. The basic aspect of algae biofuel is to transform algal oil into biodiesel, a fuel source that can be used in your diesel engine powered vehicles.

Talk to your manufactuer first, some car companies do not endorse the use of bio-diesel fuel within their vehicles and will void the warranty if an engine is damaged by its use. Make sure to research this before choosing a new automobile with a diesel engine. For older diesel cars and trucks there is no reason to stress, if the vehicle ran on petrol diesel previously it will run on algal bio-diesel as well. Knowing this will make the decision to operate your vehicle on cleaner burning algae biodiesel much easier for you.

There is a minimal amount of supplies needed to produce algae bioidiesel. You will require a growing medium for the algae, a press, water, methanol, lye and access to a biodiesel processor. You can put the biodiesel processor almost anyplace, although most people put them outside in a shed or under an garage overhang. You’ll be making algae biofuel oil so setting up in the house might not be a real good idea.

The best biodiesel plants are constructed to stop fumes and odors from escaping during the refining process. Having an odor free refining process might be important for individuals wishing to produce their fuel near their residence. If you live on a farm or large acreage this may not be as necessary as the bio-diesel plant can be located farther from your home. Of course if you’re able to afford to get a completely automated biodiesel system do so, just because they are very easy to use and will say you time.

If you have a large amount of algal oil from algae fish feed projects a biodiesel processor would work perfectly to give added value to your current business. It does take more time to grow algal biomass and refine the algal oil but the results are the same, a more ecologically friendly fuel that can be put into a diesel powered vehicle right away. Also, as soon as you start growing the algae they replenish themselves every twenty four hours so you will have an endless free source of algae biofuel for your residence heating needs and your automobiles.

The cost of fossil fuels is on an endless pricing trend upward making algal biodiesel for private use is a smart decision for anyone. Having your own algae bio-diesel production plant along with a constant flow of ecological fuel right in your own backyard will make you energy self-sufficient and saves you and your family lots of money for the future.

A lot of folks really like wild seafood which is harvested from its natural environment, but did you know a great deal of sea food nowadays is produced by substantial farming activities? Shrimp, Fish & Oyster farming has changed over the years to the extent farmers can breed and harvest domesticated wildlife they grow from farming activities by utilizing algae.

Algae vegetation is normally an unwanted site in most ponds. Thick mats of wavy green algae strands can be unsightly, but most importantly are usually an indication that the pond is out of equilibrium meaning there is too many nutrients for the pond to completely remove before the algae can feed on them. By incorporating seafood species inside these ponds that feast on algae you create a healthy and well balanced system.

Have you heard of aquaponics before? Aquaponics draws on the symbolic interactions found in nature and can be generally defined as the combination of aquaculture and hydroponics. Fish waste from traditional aquaculture systems is commonly used to fertilize plants inside a hydroponic system.

In the case of algae many of our favorite fish, oysters or shrimp, really like algae as much as we like a good sea food platter. These animals gorge themselves on algae and consequently the waste they make is recycled by the algae to thrive.

In aquaponic systems the nutritional ingredients are supplied by the fish. They produce ammonia when they breathe and whenever they expel waste, this ammonia is transformed by beneficial bacteria in to nutrients available to the algae vegetation. The solids are digested and filtered by the algae while efficiently cleaning the water.

So essentially you’ve got a closed loop method for sustaining your domesticated shrimp farms. A few farmers are going a step further than that, by increasing the volume of algae they produce inside their algae raceway ponds, they can also produce eco-friendly electrical power using the algae plants they grow.

Algae biomass does produce algae biodiesel, to power internal combustion diesel engines. Algae Aviation Fuel Inc. is producing powder algal jet fuel which powers external combustion engines such as a turbine generator, these two fuels can be used to produce green electrical energy.

The combination of algae farming for seafood production and for sustainable energy has grown in recent years. These innovative seafood farming techniques increase productivity for farmers and provide tremendous business opportunities for entrepreneurs around the globe.

Renewable Energy entrepreneurs are now searching to find the best bio-reactors with the right stuff. What is the right stuff you say? Well it should be a algae PBR that meets numerous challenges: be inexpensive, scalable, able to handle variable climates at different client sites.

Inexpensive to Execute

The initial area of concern is definitely the cost. As with all devices of a industrial size, cost is very important. The technological innovation at this time has many faces to include row crops, large open pond systems, raceway pond systems and algae PBR’s. The system you choose should have nutrients to nourish the algae, water and sunshine. Your carbon dioxide inputs can be active or ambient air flow. Cross contamination of the algal mass is a issue, but the planned use of the algae will be the best guide.

Constant Harvesting

Harvesting the algal mass will always be a concern depending on the system. It will take more effort to harvest algae from an open pond process than it would from a continuous harvesting photo-bioreactors. Continuous harvesters do just that, always harvest algae cake, at this point you will only need personnel to move the algal biomass to the next stations for drying and oil extraction.

Oil Extraction

• There are three well-known methods to extract the oil from oilseeds, and these methods apply equally well for algae too:

1. Expeller/Press

2. Hexane chemical oil removal

3. Supercritical Fluid extraction

• Expeller/Press

• Expression/Expeller press-When algal mass is dried it keeps its oil content, which then can be “forced” out with an oil press. Many industrial manufacturers of vegetable oil use a combination of mechanical pressing and chemical solvents in extracting oil.

• While more efficient procedures are appearing, an easy process is to use a press to remove a large percentage (70-75%) of the oils out of algae.

• hexane Solvent Technique

• Algae oil can be removed utilizing chemical substances. Benzene and ether have been used, but a popular chemical for solvent extraction is hexane, which is relatively inexpensive.

• Supercritical Fluid Method

• Supercritical removal involves, pressure and heat to burst algal cell membranes.

Regardless of what algae method you chose just make sure it meets your requirements and manufacturing goals.

Algae Biofuel will play a very important part in meeting the worlds increasing energy need, Algae has a place in not just our past, but also in our future as well.

The three dimensional architecture of this new photosynthetic algae bioreactor utilizes available sunlight more efficiently with a smaller footprint compared to designs oriented in a primarily horizontal or vertical configuration. As a closed system, the operational difficulties of an open pond system (water wasted by evaporation/excessive salination, temperature control, invasion by foreign micro-organisms) are readily kept under control.
This new design has solved the often-cited disadvantages of closed system bioreactors, principally attributed to gas exchange efficiency and operating costs. A single cell circulates 3000+ gallons of water at a rate of 20 – 30 gallons per minute. The flow path is all gravity driven with the exception of a 22 ft. column of water that is pumped to a topmost aerator tank. Cost of circulating the total fluid volume is thereby substantially reduced, in contrast to typical horizontal designs in which the entire water column must be moved by mechanical energy.

Each cell incorporates 5 X 275 gallon aerator tanks contiguous with the circulation of the system, with an available air column sparge for each tank, a design feature that guarantees efficient gas exchange. Gas exchange in a photosynthetic bioreactor is principally about purging excess oxygen, which in the design can be captured and applied to enhance combustion whenever an cell is integrated with a kiln/combustive power generator for emission remediation.
The introduction of gaseous nutrients/emissions such as carbon dioxide and nitrogen oxides takes place by sparge at the bottom of each cell pyramid. This design feature enforces a long residence time for gas/water interface, contributing to the efficient capture of gaseous emissions into an aqueous phase.
High areal exposure to direct sunlight, low cost of mechanical energy input, combined with efficient circulation & gas exchange in a smaller footprint, serve to make the cell a highly efficient algae biomass generator.

The demonstration on Friday was carried out at the Naval Base in Norfolk, Virginia, with a fuel that also included 50% NATO F-76 fuel.

The biofuel component comprised Soladiesel, produced by San Francisco company Solazyme.

Rear Admiral Philip Cullom, director of the Chief of Naval Operations Energy and Environmental Readiness Division (OPNAV N45), which leads the Navy’s Task Force Energy, said: “Our primary mission for Navy energy reform is to increase warfighting capability, both strategically and tactically.

“From a strategic perspective, we are reducing reliance on fossil fuels from unstable locations. Tactically, efficient use of energy resources extends our combat range and use of non-petroleum fuels assures multiple supplies are available,” added Rear Adm. Cullom.

The testing and demonstration of alternative fuels for ships is being led by Naval Sea Systems Command’s advanced fuels program office.
Solazyme

Solazyme’s Soladiesel fuel is produced by microalgae in a fermentation tank, a process that results in a bio-based oil that can then be turned into diesel or other fuels including jet fuel.

The company is also providing jet fuel for the Navy to test, while it is working to provide 150,000 gallons of diesel for Navy testing this year (see this BrighterEnergy.org story).

Commenting on the Norfolk demonstration, Solazyme CEO and co-founder Jonathan Wolfson said: “Solazyme is proud to provide the first microbially derived ship fuel used by the Navy in a military boat. The United States Navy’s commitment to reducing dependence on fossil fuels has taken another step forward today and we applaud their leadership. We are honored to be a part of Navy’s efforts to reduce its reliance on fossil fuels.”

* You will be off the electricity grid. Independent.

* You will not generate greenhouse gases. Save the earth.

At the moment, you might be imagining “Living With Ed” the television show on planet green where Ed is in the house with his pedal powered bicycle generator stand making 150kH sweating while making power. No, we’re really talking about zero point energy. No not solar powered energy, no not wind power, but a magnetic generator.

So how exactly does a magnetic powered generator compare with other renewable energy sources like solar power or wind energy?

Unlike other renewable power systems like wind generators or even solar energy generators, perpetual motion magnetic generators wouldn’t need the sun or even the breeze to blow to work properly.

So instead of thinking about these questions:

How do I construct a homemade wind generator?

Were can I find out how to construct an efficient generator?

How do I develop a generator employing a water wheel for power?

You need to contemplate this question:

Can anyone help me find instructions on how to construct a permanent magnetic generator?

To create a magnetic generator is a simple task. Yes simple. You can develop a generator for your home which is easy to build, noiseless, and beneficial to our environment. This is all achievable using magnetic energy.

*Building instructions are very easy to follow, far simpler than creating a solar or wind powered genset.

*You can use a magnet generator inside your condominium if you wanted to, you don’t need roof space or outside space.

Exactly how much does it cost to create a permanent magnetic generator? Blueprints happen to be under $50 and parts can be obtained for about $100 from your local hardware store. There are a few manuals that show you steps to make a permanent magnetic generator. One of the most popular manuals is offered as a permanent magnetic generator manual and is known as magniwork. So get started on your own renewable energy project and re-power your homes energy supply and save on your electricity bill.

No matter if you’re in South Africa, Mumbai India or Malaysia everybody has taken a close look at algae as a potential renewable biomass crop for biofuel manufacturing.

One of the pioneers from the algae bio-fuel movement is David Sieg. This U.S. citizen started off his green fuels career in a really unlikely place, Vietnam.

He was there in 1995 the the exact same time President Clinton stated how the U.S. would begin to change diplomatic relations with Vietnam, breaking a 20-year stalemate. A family member of his spouse, was one of the rich farmers who could afford a tractor, but wasn’t able to afford to purchase diesel fuel for it. One particular day David asked him how he managed to utilize his tractor without diesel fuel. The man revealed the tractor would run on vegetable oil, but wouldn’t start on it. So, he used a little bit of diesel to get it going, then changed over to vegetable oil. That had been David’s first introduction to biofuels. No one had even heard of biofuels or bio-diesel in Vietnam at the time, and David has been a green fuel supporter since then.

A few years later he started instructing at a technical school in Vietnam. Business owners soon contacted him for his practical experience on biofuels. At the time he was simply a individual whose interests included renewable energy. The school asked if he could create a sufficient amount of biodiesel to operate their power generators. Quickly after that project ended he was consulting on lots of other biofuel related projects for local business owners who needed their own individual fuel sources. Those assignments led to utilizing many kinds of organic oils, like catfish oil, palm oil, etc. And that groundwork led him eventually to algae oil for biodiesel manufacturing.

Since then David gone on to write a dozen books for the bio-fuels industry that profile sustainable biofuel as the major subject matter. What he wants to accomplish at this stage in his life is to show everyday people how they may grow algal biomass to be entirely energy independent, and do so with out drastically changing their life styles.

His objective is for everyone to be able to live as comfortable as we are right now by re-directing their energies in diverse methods. He feels this can be carried out right now, not decades or years into the future.

David writes his books for any person who believes in thinking globally and acting locally, anybody who desires to make a difference within the environment, anybody who believes that oil companies don’t have our best interest in mind, anyone who wants to be power independent.

Simply speaking, just about every person, sooner or later will recognize they too are part of the answer. So go green and produce algae biofuel to power your vehicles, David will show you how.

Most people that are Interested in Algae Biodiesel want to find out the answers to the following questions……how algae biodiesel works….how is oil extracted from algae…..how do scientist grow algae…….pros and cons of algae biodiesel………what can we use algae biodiesel for? And they want the information in general terms. So we will answer a few of these questions now.

Algae as Biodiesel

Biodiesel refers to fuel produced from once living organisms. It is usually made into a liquid or gaseous state and most people use Biodiesel for running vehicles or supplying electrical power via a diesel generator.

Going Green With Algae Biodiesel

Because of the plentiful resources of algae biomass in freshwater and other marine sources, extensive studies have been conducted for the use algae as a potential source of biodiesel. For the production of biodiesel, large scale cultivation of algae or alga culture is carried out in various countries throughout the world. The important fuels synthesized from algae oil are biogas, biodiesel, biomethanol, bioethanol, biobutanol and dry algal fuel (similar to coal) such as the group http://algaeaviationfuel.com/ has created. Many countries have implemented highly sophisticated techniques for enhancing commercial-scale cultivation of algae and the United States is a front runner in this technology.

Advantages of Algae as Biodiesel

The fast growth of algae is a contributing factor for commercial algae cultivation. Some species of algae can double their mass within a day. In comparison to other biodiesel sources such as soybeans or jatropha, there are certain advantages of using algae such as:
• The amount of oil from algae is comparatively much higher (about 30 times) than land crops.
• Marine water as well as wastewater can be used for commercial cultivation of algae.
• Unlike fossil fuels, biodiesel produced from algae are biodegradable, thus reducing environmental pollution. In case there is spills of algal-based biodiesel in water sources, there are no significant adverse effects on the ecosystem.
• Algae also sequester harmful Carbon Dioxide (C02), Nitrogen (N) and emit Oxygen (O).
Studies show that about 60 percent of algal biomass can be converted into biodiesel. The microalgae species are economically beneficial for biodiesel production than other larger algae species. The amount of carbon emission after using algal biodiesel is lower than those of fossil fuels.

Since biodiesel production from algae is a relatively new technology, more research is required to develop standardized protocols for cultivation and large scale commercial algae biodiesel production. Commercial production on a large scale usually means 1million acres under cultivation. The most popular method of extracting algal lipids is using an industrial oil press.
